F1
An F1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for those wanting to study in the U.S. The F1 visa is required upon arrival to the US in order to attend a university or college, high school, private elementary school, seminary, conservatory, language training program, or other academic institution. All international students at UNM are under this type of visa.

J1
The Exchange Visitor, non-immigrant J visa category is for individuals approved to participate in work-and study-based exchange visitor programs. This is the status in which the exchange students are.

DS-2019
Is the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status is a Department of State controlled document that is produced by SEVIS. The Form DS-2019 is the basic document required to support an application for an exchange visitor visa. This document allows the student to stay up to 12 months in the country in J-1 status.

I-20
To study in the United States as an F student a Form I-20 is needed, which is the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status. If a student receives acceptance into an academic or language school and will attend that school in F-1 status, the school is responsible for issuing the Form I-20. To issue the I-20 form the school must be certified with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, SEVP.

I-94
Is the Arrival and Departure Record, in either paper or electronic format, issued by a Customs and Border Protection Officer to foreign visitors entering the United States. Instead of a paper form, the visitor will be provided with an annotated stamp in the foreign passport. If provided a paper form, the admitting CBP Officer generally attaches the I-94 to the visitor's passport and stamps the departure date on the form. This is the actual document that proves the legal status in which a foreign is in the US.

GEO
Global Education Office is a UNM organism that provides services to international students and scholars coming to UNM, coordinates opportunities for UNM students to study overseas and offers intensive English language programs to students interested in studying in the U.S. It is the main and most important point of contact for international and exchange students.

TOEFL iBT
Test of English as a Foreign Language is a test administered via Internet. The TOEFL iBT test measures someone’s ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well a student combines listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. The scores range form 0 to 120, there is no passing or failing grade, it all depends on the amount of points that a university asks for.

IELTS
International English Language Test System is an international standardized test of English proficiency for non-native speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge. Just as in the TOEFL there is no pass or fail. IELTS is scored on a nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified competence in English.

SEVIS
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System or also known as SEVIS fee is a payment that every students non-US citizen or non-US resident must pay in order to support the program that keeps track of students and exchange visitors in the country. It is separate from and additional to the visa fee. This fee is $200 for F-1 students and $180 for J-1 visitors.

CELAC
Center for English Language and American Culture, is a school within UNM that belongs to the GEO. It offers intensive English and American culture study programs to prepare students, from everywhere in the world, with the necessary language skills to succeed in any English-speaking environment and adapt them to the USA culture through active involvement in the UNM campus.

International student
Students that are currently enroll in UNM in order to get a degree. They reside in the country under an F-1 status.

Exchange student
A student from a different university in some other part of the world that is going to be at UNM for one or two semesters at maximum. They are in the country under a J-1 status.

Lobo friend
Current UNM student that works along with the GEO office and helps new students both international and exchange to adapt to US and lobo life.

Grace period
Grace periods are periods of time that are given to J-1 and F-1 students in order to take care of certain events, such as transferring between schools, changing status, starting a new program after work authorization or departing the U.S. Not being mindful of these grace periods could cause you to fall out of status. Students cannot travel outside of the US and reenter in those statuses during the grace period. For J-1 students the grace period is 30 days whereas F-1 students have 60 days.

International Student Inc.: Christian community volunteer group that provides support to new students arriving in Albuquerque without connections. Their main aim is help students smoothly transition to a new place.
